چکیده

General This is a good study that illustrates a correlation between marine productivity, gaseous emissions of biogenic sulphur, and new particle production in the Arctic region and contrasts a period dominated by marine emissions with that of long-range pollution transport leading to Arctic haze. The authors clam that this study proves a conclusive link, including direct evidence, of DMS emissions leading to new particle C1

Interactive comment on “Observational evidence for the formation of ocean DMS-derived aerosols during Arctic phytoplankton blooms” by Ki-Tae Park et al

We thank Referee 2 for providing insightful suggestions, which have considerably improved the readability of the revised manuscript. Our responses to this referee’s one general and several comments are stated below. The revised manuscript was uploaded in the form of supplement. A general (major) concern Overstatement of our results and conclusions: A set of unique concurrent measurements (inclu...

Leads in Arctic pack ice enable early phytoplankton blooms below snow-covered sea ice

The Arctic icescape is rapidly transforming from a thicker multiyear ice cover to a thinner and largely seasonal first-year ice cover with significant consequences for Arctic primary production. One critical challenge is to understand how productivity will change within the next decades. Recent studies have reported extensive phytoplankton blooms beneath ponded sea ice during summer, indicating...

The frequency and extent of sub-ice phytoplankton blooms in the Arctic Ocean

In July 2011, the observation of a massive phytoplankton bloom underneath a sea ice-covered region of the Chukchi Sea shifted the scientific consensus that regions of the Arctic Ocean covered by sea ice were inhospitable to photosynthetic life. Although the impact of widespread phytoplankton blooms under sea ice on Arctic Ocean ecology and carbon fixation is potentially marked, the prevalence o...

Organic Contribution on Particles Formed on Pacific Ocean: From Phytoplankton Blooms to Climate

These SOAP project Pacific Ocean measurements reveal that phytoplankton blooms with sunny conditions make possible secondary organic contribution to ultrafine particles size and composition, and thus on cloud formation ability, and finally on climate. This is in agreement with other biologically active region observations about the presence of secondary organics even the exact fraction is also ...

Spatial Distribution of Methanesulphonic Acid in the Arctic Aerosol Collected during the Chinese Arctic Research Expedition

Methanesulphonic acid (MSA, mainly derived from marine biogenic emissions) has been frequently used to estimate the marine biogenic contribution. However, there are few reports on MSA over the Arctic Ocean, especially the central Arctic Ocean. Here, we analyzed MSA in aerosol samples collected over the ocean and seas during the Chinese Arctic Research Expedition (CHINARE 2012) using ion chromat...
